A nicely written history of a pivotal year in the personal and public life of Winston Churchill; one that contained much of interest to world history and current affairs. The USSR, Iraq, the Holy Lands, Ireland, and the United States all were touched by the middle-aged Churchill.It is astonishing to read how active and wide-ranging Churchill was in just one twelve-month period. Professor Stafford does an admirable job of blending the personal, such as his new found love of painting and deeply felt deaths in the family, with the public, such as the hard negotiations to bring peace to Ireland.Worthy to be placed on your book shelve devoted to Churchill.One point of attribution from p. 214: It was Edward R. Murrow, and not President Kennedy, who first wrote that Churchill "mobilized the English language and sent it into battle."
